Windows 11 users, there’s good news on the horizon. An update is on its way for Copilot+ PCs that promises to tackle one of the more underwhelming aspects of the operating system: its search capabilities. The latest Insider build teases an enhanced Windows Search, thanks to AI and specific hardware, which aims to simplify your quest for documents, photos, and settings.
Currently, this upgraded search feature is only available on Copilot+ PCs that run on Snapdragon processors. But don’t worry, Microsoft assures us that AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs will soon have a chance to test this feature as well.
It’s a bit disappointing, though, that this improved search is initially exclusive to Snapdragon-powered devices, especially when some top Copilot+ PCs boast Intel or AMD processors.
The enhanced Windows Search feature was first unveiled by Microsoft back in October last year. It’s designed to let users employ natural language within the Windows Search pane, making it easier to find content or tweak settings.
This improved search function takes advantage of the NPUs found in all Copilot+ PCs. These processors, capable of 40 TOPS, should handle AI features effortlessly.
Since Copilot+ PCs hit the market last June, we’ve yet to see a feature that’s truly exclusive or groundbreaking under this branding. Our Senior Editor, Zac Bowden, even described the Copilot+ PC launch as a "complete fiasco."
A big part of that disappointing launch was due to a lack of standout features.
There’s potential for change, though, with the introduction of unique features that users will eagerly embrace. A better Windows Search might be the ticket, especially since the current system is often regarded as insufficient. Enhancing it with AI might just alleviate some users’ frustrations.
According to Microsoft’s latest release notes, AI will play a key role in refining content searches via Windows Search and File Explorer.
Windows 11 Build 26100.3624: What’s New
Improved Windows Search
Finding what you need in Windows 11 has never been easier on Copilot+ PCs, thanks to an updated Windows Search powered by advanced semantic indexing models. Whether you’re diving into File Explorer, navigating the Search on your taskbar, or exploring Settings, simply type what you’re thinking, and let your Copilot+ PC do the finding. Forget remembering file names or settings names; descriptive phrases like “change my theme” will do the trick. Armed with a 40+ TOPS NPU, these enhancements work even offline. Initially available on Snapdragon-powered PCs, support for AMD and Intel variants is coming soon.
With these improvements, locating your cloud-stored photos becomes a breeze on Copilot+ PCs. At the top right corner of File Explorer, just type a phrase like “summer picnics,” and see results that include both locally stored and cloud photos. Exact text matches within your cloud files will also pop up. Give this a go with your OneDrive when you’re logged in. Snapdragon devices get first dibs, but AMD and Intel PCs aren’t far behind.
When Will These Updates Roll Out Widely?
At present, improved Windows Search is being tested by Windows Insiders through the Release Preview Channel on Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm chips. While that does signal progress, things could always change.
Back in November, when Microsoft initially outlined the feature, they hinted it would land for everyone in the Windows Insider Program by early 2025, without specifying a general release date.
Typically, features entering the Release Preview Channel trickle down to general availability within four to six weeks, though that’s not set in stone. No firm release date exists, but we expect this enhanced search to arrive soon.
On April 4, 2025, Microsoft plans to hold an AI-centric event for consumers, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. It’s an ideal occasion for the tech leader to demonstrate the new AI functionalities, including the highly anticipated improved Windows Search.
