Daredevil has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a bit, but his latest series might take a different route from previous stories.
In 2021, fans were thrilled when Marvel officially introduced Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox, into the MCU. After that, he popped up in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” a show with a much lighter tone compared to the intense Netflix Daredevil series—a vibe that’s expected to continue in “Born Again.” But, as revealed by the show’s runner, Dario Scardapane, “Born Again” might not heavily reference Daredevil’s earlier MCU appearances. In an interview with SFX magazine, via GamesRadar, Scardapane mentioned, “Marvel has a master plan, and what you’re doing causes ripple effects. I would pitch stuff very early and I would hear that they had other plans.”
He explained that he had the freedom to develop ideas until they clashed with the overarching MCU storyline, so some things from the larger universe might be overlooked. Scardapane stated, “We establish a very specific Daredevil, both in terms of his dilemma, down to the suit and where we’re picking him up in his life. You can say that Daredevil is canon in the MCU, those other events (in ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘She-Hulk’) happened, but some of them we are not leaning into. His one-night stand with She-Hulk may be one of those things.”
Many fans are likely okay with this decision, and it seems Daredevil might find a new love interest in a character named Heather Glenn, played by Margarita Levieva. This situation highlights the challenges of working within an interconnected universe—maybe more spin-offs could be the key, Marvel?
Scardapane also teased, “We’ve moved Matt through other corners of the MCU, and now he’s back in his own story. I don’t want to give anything away, but you’re going to see a character [in our show] you never thought you would, but they get folded into the story in a manner that is organic and exists in our world. New York, in the current state of the MCU, has a lot of stuff going on.” While we don’t know who this mysterious character is, all will be revealed soon, with the show launching on March 4 in the US and March 5 in the UK.
