War Thunder has always been about commanding fierce machines in battle. Whether you’re battling with tanks, challenging your rival at sea, or engaging in thrilling aerial dogfights, it’s all about machines. But up until now, there’s been one thing missing from these epic skirmishes—foot soldiers maneuvering around the battlefield. Well, that changes now. AI-controlled infantry is making its debut in War Thunder as part of Gaijin’s clever April Fool’s Day surprise—a World War I mode!
The game’s massive collection of tanks, aircraft, and battleships typically traces back to World War II, but this new, limited-time event takes us on a journey even further back. Dubbed ‘The Great War,’ this event throws players into the chaos of the Western Front of World War I, equipped with a cadre of new ground and air vehicles from the period.
Throughout this week-long event, players can unlock seven brand-new vehicles by progressing through stages for both the Allies (consisting of Britain, France, and the USSR) and the German Empire over five days. And the best part? Once unlocked, these vehicles are yours to keep and can be used in other War Thunder modes.
Though some special air vehicles are featured in the event, you won’t be able to permanently add them to your collection. Each faction has access to a bomber plane, and there are massive zeppelins up for grabs as well. Commanding these airships allows players to deliver destructive payloads across the battlefield.
But there’s more than just these historical machines to enjoy. For the first time, War Thunder is introducing infantry into the fray. AI soldiers will now dash out of the trenches and advance on enemy lines, even attacking enemy vehicles with grenades—posing a real threat beyond just tank targeting practice or added atmosphere.
Gaijin has hinted that a substantial closed beta for the infantry is “very soon,” but ‘The Great War’ serves as a sneak peek at how these units can transform War Thunder’s combat dynamics.
Veteran players have been asking for infantry for ages, notwithstanding War Thunder’s usual vehicle-centric focus. It’s promising to finally see troops joining the battle. However, it’s also somewhat hilarious (and nerve-wracking) that this reveal comes linked to a WW1-themed April Fool’s Day event. If this happens to be an elaborate joke and the infantry disappear post-event, Gaijin might be facing some disgruntled players—and at least one irked gaming journalist!
Currently live and running until Monday, April 7, War Thunder’s ‘The Great War’ event is ready for action. If you’re passionate about World War I, much like fans of Battlefield 1, you’d be delighted to dive into War Thunder without spending a cent, as it’s freely available on Steam.
