There are moments in the gaming world when a mod rises to such popularity and brilliance that it evolves into something entirely new. Remember how PUBG and DayZ came into being from Arma? Or how The Forgotten City emerged from the depths of Skyrim? Well, Total Chaos is doing something similar, transforming from an epic Doom 2 mod into a standalone horror FPS, looking like it’s been remade in Unreal Engine 5. With the original mod creator onboard, the game offers an experience rich in Silent Hill-like chills blended with Stalker-esque survival elements. Exciting news for gamers: a new demo just released during Steam Next Fest, and the full game is slated to drop later this year.
Back in 2018, Total Chaos made its debut as a total conversion mod for Doom 2. Fast forward to today, and it’s now a standalone masterpiece. The game invites players into the hauntingly atmospheric Fort Oasis, a once-prosperous mining town now engulfed in shadow and decay. Through the crackling static of a mysterious radio voice, you’re driven to venture deep into the desolate mines and buildings, unraveling the terrifying secrets lurking within.
Though its roots are planted in Doom, don’t expect a frenetic shooter full of non-stop gunplay. While it retains FPS elements, Total Chaos shifts focus to scarce resources, rarely offering firearms or ammo, pushing you towards brutal melee combat. Resources are precious, and with makeshift weapons crafted from whatever you can scavenge, inventory management becomes key—a weight system ensures you can’t just hoard it all and march on.
For those wanting to immerse fully in its spine-chilling setting and come face-to-face with its grotesque creatures, Total Chaos is also launching a VR version. Initially pegged for a broad 2025 release, the game and its VR variant are now set to debut on Steam on Thursday, July 24.
Adding to the excitement, Trigger Happy Interactive has announced post-launch content—paid DLC named Epilogue, which promises an extended storyline, new locales to explore, and an all-new tenth chapter, sure to intrigue players further.
Impatient for the July release? No worries! An enhanced demo is available as part of Steam Next Fest, running until Monday, March 3, allowing players a sneak peek into the eerie chaos.
