Seems like we’re encountering yet another canceled game story—this time, it’s about PlatinumGames’ Project G.G., a title that bore some similarities to Ultra Man but never really showed much of its hand.
Remember Project G.G.? It was announced all the way back in 2020, but after that, the curtains just hung in silence about it. Then came 2023, and Hideki Kamiya, the game’s director and one of the founding members of the studio, decided to part ways with PlatinumGames. Naturally, this sparked a flurry of speculation about whether the game would see the light of day. And now it looks like it won’t. If you take a look at PlatinumGames’ website today, they’ve got a list of games they’ve worked on, ten in total, including big names like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and recently announced Ninja Gaiden 4.
With a bit of digital sleuthing on the Wayback Machine, you’ll find that this list used to be twice as long, flaunting 22 games. The list featured licensed titles such as Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra. There were also games they developed independently like Madworld, and unfortunately, the not-so-memorable Babylon’s Fall—each of these titles still has its own page, despite being dropped from the current listing (hat tip to Eurogamer for pointing this out). Project G.G. has not only been removed from this list but also lost its dedicated page, with its URL now leading you straight back to PlatinumGames’ homepage.
This pretty much seals the fate of Project G.G.—a game that now seems abandoned on the drawing board, particularly as Kamiya has been out of the picture for over a year. It’s been fairly confusing lately to pin down what PlatinumGames is cooking up, especially with hints of a recent talent drain, but at least the new Ninja Gaiden game suggests that they’ll keep making magic for a bit longer.
