Ever since Monster Hunter Wilds launched a few weeks ago, I’ve been engrossed in trying to climb the ranks in the high-tier zones. Deciding on which new armor set to craft next is almost as challenging as the hunts themselves. Right now, I’m tailing the formidable Jin Dahaad, although the idea of creating the Gravios armor—perfect for my hammer build—has certainly caught my fancy. There’s plenty to dive into in Wilds, but something crucial feels absent.
And what is that, you ask? Well, I’d love nothing more than to dress up a piglet in cute attire and carry it around like a cherished pet.
I’m referring to Monster Hunter’s lovable Poogie, the plump, floppy-eared pig that’s as iconic as the series’ fierce Rathalos. Poogies have been a staple in the Monster Hunter universe for some time. I first encountered one in Monster Hunter World’s hub area. A sweet little ritual involves petting Poogie, where a charming tune plays while you shower him with love. If your timing with the button presses is just right, Poogie is delighted! Of course, because Monster Hunter games like to keep you on your toes, if you get it wrong, Poogie will scamper off, only to return after you tackle another quest.
In past Monster Hunter titles, a Poogie would wander around the main gathering areas, and petting him before heading out was believed to boost a player’s luck, helping with obtaining those elusive monster parts. Rumor has it that this function might actually be hidden somewhere in the game code, though it’s never been officially verified.
But Poogie’s not just about luck! In previous games, you could earn his trust and affection enough to dress him in various outfits. Honestly, who could resist a pig in a bee costume? In Monster Hunter World, I’d lovingly carry Poogie around the hub, waiting eagerly for the controller’s vibration hinting at hidden treasure nearby. (Shoutout to YouTuber TagBackTV for an awesome explainer on that feature.)
Now, Monster Hunter Wilds does include a Poogie, but you won’t cross paths with him until chapter 3, tucked away in a village I hardly visit unless a particular quest calls for it. True, this Poogie sometimes sports an adorable spherical frog on its back—cute, no doubt—but the range of interactions is nowhere near the level seen in prior games. And, unfortunately, no fancy striped pajamas or woolly ram costume; all I can do is give Poogie a pat and change his name.
Looking ahead, Capcom has dropped hints about next week’s Title 1 update for Monster Hunter Wilds, featuring a vibrant gathering hub as an alternative to the various campsites scattered across the Forbidden Lands. The teaser from Capcom’s 12-minute update hints at plenty of joys in the new Grand Hub, such as games and an expanded kitchen (which, fingers crossed, means the return of the beloved cooking cat, the Meowscular Chef).
Yet the new hub won’t truly warm my heart unless there’s a pig I can scoop up and carry around. Here’s hoping, Capcom—give us what we’re craving.
