Recently, Sony Pictures rolled out their film adaptation of Supermassive Games’ horror adventure, “Until Dawn.” However, the movie is sparking controversy for failing to acknowledge the original game’s writers.
Eurogamer highlighted that the creators behind the 2015 “Until Dawn” video game are missing from the film’s credits. Instead, the movie briefly notes that it’s “based on the Sony game.” Kim MacAskill, who once served as PlayStation’s Narrative Director, voiced her disappointment and shared insights from her time with the company. She has even initiated a petition to ensure proper recognition for the game’s creators, amassing 243 signatures so far.
“As someone who was told I’d never receive credit for the IP I personally developed due to my salaried position—no royalties, no control, no ownership—I struggle with how Neil Druckmann is treated compared to others at the company,” MacAskill remarked.
“I just left ‘Until Dawn’ where filmmakers and writers were credited, yet the pioneering game developers are overlooked, merely referenced as ‘based on the Sony game.’”
“What incentive is there for IP creators to continue their work with you? Even in film and TV, credit is rightfully given, despite the industry’s flaws.”
In a chat with the Hollywood Reporter, Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick, the minds behind “Until Dawn,” expressed their frustration over the lack of credit.
“I didn’t expect much, but thought maybe someone would add our names, even in the end credits,” Fessenden told the Hollywood Reporter. “But courtesy isn’t something you find in showbiz.”
