If you’re familiar with the British Isles, you might not picture Birmingham as a prime spot for a video game setting. But travel back to the 14th century and toss in some zombies, and suddenly, it’s a whole new ballgame. That’s exactly the premise of “God Save Birmingham.” After catching a glimpse of about eight minutes of fresh gameplay footage, it’s skyrocketed up my list of must-play zombie games.
I’ll admit, my taste in zombie games usually leans towards cooperative experiences filled with huge hordes and wild weaponry. Think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2—you get the idea. Because of this, I’ve been eagerly anticipating games like Killing Floor 3 and John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, despite the lack of updates on the latter. However, “God Save Birmingham” now holds the top spot for me.
This isn’t your typical co-op frenzy with electrified bats or portable jet turbines for dispatching zombies. While I’ve seen snippets before, the latest extended trailer from IGN brings to mind a vibe similar to The Last of Us. It showcases third-person stealth and heavy takedown animations. I doubt its storytelling will match the intensity of TLOU, but when it comes to zombie takedowns, it definitely channels a similar energy.
The game emphasizes interacting with your environment in clever ways. You can move furniture to block doorways, transform ladders into bridges, and use chairs to reach higher ledges. Everything, including both you and the zombies, features realistic and reactive physics, creating what appears to be a really engaging sandbox.
The new trailer also dives into its rich survival mechanics. You’ll manage meters for hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even panic. Stocking up with your inventory means choosing your items in real-time—no pausing to munch on bread. Falling from heights can result in leg injuries, slowing you down. You can disassemble objects for materials, and there’s a full cooking system too.
Overall, it looks fantastic, with its medieval setting providing a fresh twist on the zombie survival genre. While “God Save Birmingham” doesn’t have a release date yet, it’s poised for an early access launch.
