According to recent whispers in the gaming industry, Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, is in the process of crafting its own battle royale game, setting its sights on competing with the popular Apex Legends.
The game, which currently goes by the codename Scout, seems to share quite a few similarities with Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts’ successful title Apex Legends. It’s said that Scout’s artwork was even used as a thumbnail reminiscent of Apex Legends at one point, and there are reports suggesting character designs that echo those found in Apex. This project has been under development for a while now.
Ubisoft’s strategy appears to hinge on the belief that there’s an opportunity to attract players looking for something fresh, especially given that Apex Legends has experienced a dip in revenue lately—a fact acknowledged by its own publisher, Electronic Arts.
A source close to the matter noted, “The idea is to take advantage of the decreasing number of Apex players. Ubisoft’s leadership seems to believe there’s space in the market for a new hero-centric battle royale game.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s inaugural attempt at stepping into the free-to-play battle royale landscape. They previously launched Hyperscape in 2020, although that game was shelved just a year and a half later. This fresh initiative comes right after Ubisoft also decided to shut down their free-to-play shooter XDefiant by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends have something to look forward to with a new 2.0 iteration planned for release sometime after April 2026.
