Honestly, it’s hard not to gush about Mecha Break. It’s truly outstanding. When I tried it out about a year ago, I was impressed, but playing it recently from the comfort of my home has absolutely gripped my attention. Sure, there are a few bumps in the road, but for an open beta part of Steam’s Next Fest, I’m struggling to name another game I’d rather dive into right now.
For those new to it, Mecha Break is an online multiplayer shooter. Players team up in one of two modes: classic online PvP skirmishes or PvPvE battles known as Mashmak, which combine player-versus-player combat with some enemy mobs. You’ll find a diverse selection of mechs to choose from and plenty of customization options, like colors and pilot outfits. Not bad at all for a beta release.
Now, about Mashmak—it’s pretty decent. The map’s immense, and I’ve had some seriously thrilling face-offs against other players. Plus, the occasional map bosses, these giant robots akin to raid bosses, add a nice touch. But what really draws me in is the straightforward online PvP. Packed with six-on-six action, it has that tantalizing live service attraction. It’s more fun than Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, Rainbow Six Siege, you name it.
There are two standout reasons for this. First, the presentation is top-tier. Mech fans will find this game a visual delight. Fancy small mechs with sniper rifles? Check. How about flying mechs that swoop down for bombing runs? Double check. There’s a wide array of mechanized marvels here, and it’s surprising if you can’t find at least one you’ll love. The downside? Some mechs require significant amounts of in-game currency to unlock. But, you’ll still have a good variety of each type to enjoy without too much grinding.
Then there’s the movement—it’s exhilarating. Initially, you’re just boosting to various spots, managing the basics. But as you get the hang of it, you zoom around, deftly maneuvering your mech in an intricate dance with opponents. Two skilled pilots can turn a fight into a beautiful spectacle of parries, dashes, and combos, with some strategic shooting mixed in. It’s a real showcase of skill.
In the beta, the game seems pretty generous with its rewards. There is a battle pass, though it’s not active yet, but it looks like a whole mech might end up being exclusive to it. Hopefully, this won’t pose too much of a hurdle for free-to-play players. As for the game’s power unlocks, there are rare mods you can craft by combining top-tier items found in Mashmak. These mods give your mechs a slight edge, which might ring some alarm bells. We’ll see how accessible they truly are—it’ll be important that they’re not burdensome on players’ wallets.
Right now, Mecha Break is a remarkable game, having surfaced on Steam during the Next Fest. If you’ve got time, it’s absolutely worth a download. It’s unparalleled in its class. Dive in! I bet you’ll uncover a strategy that speaks to you.
